Been a fly fishing for 40 yrs. I started using loop reels 6.5 glass 2wt, really long greased furl leaders. Either watched trout flash when they stopped nymph, or followed slowly sinking ripper. Tedious but effective. However breezes of rivers such as the Green, San Juan etc. pretty much negated doing this. The vertical presentation with Tenkara effective in these situations. Pretty cool. Fish don't usually know "what hit them". Plus, Tenkara is a blast as well as very suited to these stealthy techniques.

As age slows my pace, I will become more like the heron.
We've all had situations where seriously chewed up flies kept catching fish after fish after fish. It is no sin to tie flies that come off the vise looking seriously chewed up.
The hooks are sharp.
The coffee's hot.
The fish are slippery when wet.
