New Species (for me)

by Terry Farmer

Went to a recently opened mountain creek in Northern NM a few days ago. Had big fun fishing my Suntech Suikei 39 with a level line and flying ant pattern. Caught 11 mystery fish. They looked a lot like trout, which is what I was expecting to catch, but something just wasn't quite right. Later in the day I learned they were Chubs. Wild and native Rio Grande Chubs. They're great little fighters and quite beautiful with orange fins and gill slashes. There's real truth to the old saying "you learn something new every day".

Most underrated fish!
by: Chris Stewart

Chubs are seriously underrated. The seiryu rods (Suntech Kurenai and the Nissin Air Stage Hakubai, etc) are used in Japan to catch a particular species of chub that we don't have here (they have competitions for them and both Suntech and Nissin have specific competition rod models). With the right rod, chubs are excellent sport. As you said, great fighters.

New Mexican
by: Joaquin

Hi Terry,

Great looking chub!! Just getting started with tenkara and am new to NM. I live in Rio Rancho and have been having some luck in the Fenton Lake and the Cebolla River areas. I have struck out at Jemez badly a couple of times and wonder if you had any general locations you could impart. Also, are there some 2 day fish spots that I can get to in a few hours that you really recommend? My brother and I wanna do Pecos. I know, it's probably bad form to ask your best hole, but I gotta give it a shot. I do have a couple of NM fishing guide books coming.

I think those are questions best asked one-on-one rather than on a public message board. If Joaquin and Terry are both willing I will exchange contact info.

Always up for chubs
by: Alan Luecke

Two years ago I'd never seen a chub. Now they're a mainstay of my little local creeks. I'm going to New Mexico in two weeks. Yeah, yeah we'll catch trout. But a new chub, now you're talking.

The hooks are sharp.
The coffee's hot.
The fish are slippery when wet.
