Blue Grass

Corny title? Yes, for sure. Sweet corn was the bait.

While fishing for grass carp on a Kyogi 15, I was surprised to land 5 blue catfish on sweet corn this week.

This is a very capable rod. Yes, a few fish snapped my line like I was using a Walmart Spider-Man kids rod, but that’s ok. I was using 1x Varivas 11.2 lb tippet in a 25 lb mono main line. No weight this time and a small Drennan float.

Dad was teasing me about using a “cane pole” but I schooled him with this setup. Call me grandma, dad! That free-falling corn was irresistible!

Dan - Thanks for sharing the catfish pictures. I have not tried to catch them yet. I'll have to give your method a try!

I think your Dad is jealous!

nice cat!

Nice cat there Dan. Back in SE WI I fished a river that held Channel Cats, big Smallmouth and some nice pike. Back then I was using spinning and fly rods tho. Nothing like catching all three on fly rod hair bugs.

It's great to read about all these non traditional fish on tenkara.

As age slows my pace, I will become more like the heron.

Warning:

The hooks are sharp.
The coffee's hot.
The fish are slippery when wet.
