Longear Sunfish

Longear Sunfish

I wanted to post this picture because it’s just a pretty fish! I caught him I’m Shoal Creek located in Gladstone, MO, just south of Maple Woods Community College. This is at the extreme edge of their range. There were three, connected pools that held this fish, bluegill, green sunfish and creek chubs. I was pleased that I was able to get the pic, as he barely fit in my photo tank. (That tank was a smart investment!).

Beautiful Fish!
by: Les Albjerg

When I was in Texas a year ago I caught my first Longear. I thought it was a Pumpkinseed. In Minnesota and in Idaho the only Sunfish we have are
the Bluegill and Pumpkinseed. There may be more species in Minnesota, but those were the only two I remember catching. When or maybe if, I get to retire, it would be fun to do a tour through the south and east and catch the other species of Sunfish.

Again, a much under appreciated fish. Does anyone know of a good book on the Sunfishes?

Awesome picture in your fish tank. I need to get my projects done, and get out fishing. I haven't gotten out at all this week. I was going to to out for an hour last evening, but we had another lightning show.

The hooks are sharp.
