Obtaining quality horse hair

by Leslie Wrixon

Purchased a horse hair line-making kit last month. Totally love it. Now my friends want me to teach them how to make horse hair lines and leaders. Where can I purchase the horsehair in larger quantities or "bulk?" Have seen a lot on line, but not sure of species and origin of hair.

Hard to say...
by: TenkaraBum

Leslie, it is hard to say. My supplier also sells in bulk, but is not the same hair (much shorter length than the hair in the individual hanks). I have bought from a couple on-line suppliers and found a big difference in the quality of the hair I received.

The species will be the same for all the hair, and to be honest, I do not think there is any way to be sure of the origin. I trust that the on line suppliers of violin bow hair truthfully report what was told to them by their suppliers, but I can't say I trust their suppliers.

I have never bought in bulk, only by the hank, and I am not sure the suppliers (or the quality) would be the same for both.

I know this hasn't been of any help, but I really don't know the answer to your question.

I don't seem to have your email address so I cannot contact you (perhaps you bought it at the Sowbug Roundup?). Send me an email at chris at tenkarabum dot com. I have an idea for you.
