Stonfo Catch and Release Tool

The Stonfo Catch and Release Tool is a very cleverly designed tool for removing hooks. You can use it to unhook fish without touching them or to remove hooks taken deep in the throat.

No, the official name is not Catch and Release Tool. Stonfo calls it the Slamatore Tubetech. I don't think "slamatore" is going to mean much to most American anglers, and both Tubetech  and Tube-tech are already taken as the names of an industrial tubing company and high end audio recording equipment. I'll just call it the Stonefo Catch and Release Tool.

Medium (above) and small (below)

In basic design and operation, the Stonefo Catch and Release Tool is similar to the better known Waterworks Lamson Ketchum Release, but there are a couple design elements that set it apart.

The rear part of the "barrel" has a "V" shape (marked by the red arrow) that makes it easy to quickly catch the line and slide it through the slot in the side of the barrel.

At the front end of the barrel are three notches that can engage the hook bend.

On the side of the barrel opposite the slot through which the line goes, there is a fin. After you have caught the line in the "V", slid the line through the slot into the barrel, and then slid the Catch and Release tool down the line and reached the hook, push the tool forward to free the hook and then rotate the tool counterclockwise.

That puts the point of the hook against the fin so you can remove the tool and the hook without the hook catching again on the way out. With this fin, the Stonfo Catch and Release tool is a disgorger in addition to just a hook remover.

When keiryu fishing, I have noticed that striking quickly, at the first hint of a take, hooks fish in exactly the same spots in the mouth where I hook them when fishing flies. Deep hooking has not been a problem. That said, if you allow some slack in your line or are a bit slow on the uptake, deep hooking is possible. A tool like this will help to remove the hook safely and quickly.

Although Stonfo makes the Catch and Release Tool in three sizes, I have chosen to carry only the small and the medium. The small will be ideal for smaller flies, smaller trout and for sunfish. The medium will be ideal for larger flies, larger trout and bass. A Killer Bug tied on a size 10 Daiichi 1120 will require the medium Catch and Release Tool. Either size will work with keiryu hooks, although the extreme shape of the Gamakatsu Amago works better with the medium than the small.
