Morell Fly Box

The small Morell fly box is a pretty good choice for tenkara anglers. When Dr. Ishigaki gave his tenkara presentation in the Catskills in 2009, people were in awe of his hand carved and hand painted fly box. I think he was a bit disappointed that they were so much more interested in the box than in the flies themselves. That's a bit like ignoring a painting by one of the masters while oo-ing and ah-ing over the frame. The flies are what is important, not the box.

For a long time I used a very small, minimalist fly box (the same 6-compartment box I now ship flies in). It was fine, and I still think it may be the only box you need when on a stream, but this small, foam fly box offers a number of advantages.

For one, whatever your thoughts on the "one fly" discussions circulating on the tenkara forums and blogs, it will hold more flies than the smaller 6-compartment box (either more flies of the same pattern or more patterns).

If you do wish to have several patterns, or several colors/sizes of the same pattern, you can organize them so it is easier to see what you have (and what you're getting low on and may need to tie or reorder).

Finally, I've only had this happen once, but it has happened. I opened the 6-compartment box and put a number of flies from one compartment onto the lid to find the one fly I was looking for. A gust of wind blew several of the flies off the lid and into the stream. In the foam box, the flies are hooked into the foam, and neither a gust of wind nor dropping the box will dislodge them. And if you do happen to drop the box, it will float. You'd better be standing in an eddy if you hope to recover it, but at least you have a chance.

The boxes measures 4" x 3" x 1.25" deep. They're covered in a nylon fabric that protects the foam. Closure is magnetic, which means the box is easy to open even with cold, wet hands, yet it will reliably stay closed when you want it to. And they weigh just this side of nothing, so they're great for backpackers.

If you already have a half dozen of the fancy boxes that each hold seventy 'leven flies, you probably don't need this box. But if you're a beginner at fly fishing (and you've found this site early enough) or if you'd just like to simplify your life and your fishing, it's not a bad way to go.
