Big Grayling on Tenkara

by David Southall
(East Yorkshire, UK)

I'd been targeting a big grayling on my local, Driffield, East Yorkshire, UK, chalk stream for a couple of weeks without success, just a few big, out of season, browns in the 2 to 3lb range, that put a good bend in my ESOTERIC 410cm 6:4 rod.

However on November 9th I had another half hour session trying to persuade it. 2 big browns & a small grayling of 12" were hooked & landed & I was fearful that they had disturbed the big grayling that was clearly visible close to the pool tail. Fortunately they had not & finally I tempted it with a subtly lifted & twitched orange scud (tied with ultra violet shrimp pink ice dub). It weighted 3lb 2oz & was 18.5" long from snout to the fork of its tail; my second biggest grayling & on Tenkara.

Tenkara is ideal for UK grayling fishing as they are relatively easy to get close to but are hyper fussy about presentation.

Big Tenkara Fish in Germany too!
by: Eberhard Scheibe

Hello David,
It is a good time to get a substantial Greyling in November.
This season in Thueringia is really good.
Fishing the river Ilm as my Home Water.
Some Greylings about 40cm and over. A shocking 60cm, 5kg Carp on unweighted nymphs like BH-GRHE or a Pheasant Tail in size 14 to 12.
I'm using a Tenkara Times Watershed 400 with a short Czech Setup and a 0,14mm Stroft Tippet
My carp was a seldom ability to try my fortune about flyfishing.
There are always many anglers can't believe this.

Have a nice end-saison this year

Tight lines to you also. I love the fishing in Austria: much of it ideal for Tenkara.

The hooks are sharp.
The coffee's hot.
The fish are slippery when wet.
